What is Truth-telling, anyway?

“You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.” Psalm 18:28-29

While having a candid conversation [podcast #82] with my teacher friend Bekah Hutchinson from SW Washington, I had an idea…

What if telling the truth about how we feel about our circumstances… is a way to free our own hearts to be real with God …and others?

Then as Bekah and I were talking it hit me. Our Good Daddy God loves to come and tell us His truth about our true identities, the truth about how He sees our circumstances, and more than willing to give us strategies for moving forward if we ask.

So why don’t we truth tell? Why don’t we ask Him for help?

As Christian educators, I think we often feel like we need to be the strong ones at our schools; that we shouldn’t have worries or fears, and yet we really do. The writer of Hebrews 3-4 encourages us to labor to let go of unbelief (fear) so that we can inherit the promises God is inviting us to walk into. But our own perceptions of what others think often stop us from being real and being the full gift of ourselves we were born to be.

What if every morning we woke up and gave all that was on our hearts to Jesus? What if we invited Him to come and show us how He sees us? What if we asked Him to show us how to be our real identity in every situation?

It could be as simple as this:

[Kingdom Educator] “Jesus, I am afraid I’m not ready for teaching my lessons today. You know I hate it when my classroom feels out of control.”

[Jesus] “Could you ask me for what you need? I am right here with you and I see that you have all you need to live victorious today.”

[Kingdom Educator] “Jesus, I need help recognizing how to run my math and science lessons more successfully today. Last week they were out of control because I forgot a few pertinent directions that sent my students into a tailspin of confusion and the negative behaviors escalated.”

[Jesus] “What if you walked into your classroom knowing you carry me– Peace– into your space? Take a deep breath and invite me into the lesson planning time with you. As you read through the lessons I will show you what steps you need to include to maintain peace in your classroom. Expect that I will give you the keys you need.”

God loves it when we confess our fears to Him. He loves to hold us and shine the light of His truth into the dark spaces. And He loves to plan and teach connected with you!

Be encouraged! You are making an eternal difference. And truthtelling is just another powerful self-care tool that can increase your impact as a Kingdom Educator. If you’d like to catch the full conversation with Bekah check out Podcast #82 HERE.
