Christian Teacher, You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

The names on your class list have become faces.

You’re beginning to learn personalities, strengths, needs, and stories. You may already know which class will require a little extra grace. There may be a student you can’t quite figure out yet, a coworker you’re unsure how to navigate, or a situation that has followed you home in your thoughts.

The school year isn’t something you’re preparing for anymore.

You’re in it.

And perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask as Christian educators right now isn’t:

How am I going to handle all of this?

But instead:

Jesus, what are You inviting me to see?

Ask Jesus to Help You See What He Sees

Paul prayed a beautiful prayer in Ephesians:

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened…”
Ephesians 1:17–18 (NIV)

What if that became one of our prayers for this school year?

Jesus, open the eyes of my heart. Help me see what You see.

Help me see beyond the behavior to the child.

Help me recognize what might be happening beneath the surface.

Help me see my coworkers through Your eyes.

Help me recognize the opportunities You place in front of me.

Help me notice what You’re already doing in my classroom so I can partner with You.

Because there is so much we simply cannot see on our own.

And that’s okay.

We were never meant to do this on our own.

“Apart From Me You Can Do Nothing”

Jesus says in John 15:5:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5 (NIV)

Sometimes we can hear those last words almost like a correction:

Apart from Me you can do nothing.

But what if we also heard the invitation inside them?

You don’t have to do this without Me.

You don’t have to figure out that student by yourself.

You don’t have to walk into the difficult meeting alone.

You don’t have to manufacture Kingdom impact.

You don’t even have to know exactly what to do next.

You have access to the One who does.

What Does It Mean to “Teach Connected”?

This is what I mean when I encourage educators to Teach Connected.

It isn’t about adding another spiritual practice to an already-full teacher schedule.

It’s learning to become aware of the One who is already there.

Before you respond to the email:

“Jesus, give me Your wisdom and Your words.”

When the student you’re struggling to understand walks through the door:

“Jesus, help me see what You see.”

When the lesson falls apart or something unexpected happens:

“Jesus, what are You doing here?”

When you simply don’t know what to do:

“What’s my next faithful yes?”

These prayers don’t require an extra hour in your day.

Sometimes partnership with Jesus happens in thirty seconds between classes.

Sometimes it’s a prayer whispered while students are working.

Sometimes it’s sitting in your car for a moment before walking into the building and acknowledging:

Jesus, You’re already here.

Your Classroom Is an Invitation to Partnership

Being a Kingdom educator was never supposed to mean trying harder to make a bigger impact for God.

We are invited to walk with Him.

To listen.

To notice.

To receive His wisdom.

And then to respond to what He shows us.

That changes the pressure we carry.

Instead of walking into a difficult situation thinking, I have to fix this, we can pause and ask, Jesus, how are You inviting me to partner with You here?

Instead of deciding during the first few weeks who “that student” is going to be all year, we can pray:

Jesus, show me who You created this child to be.

There may be something He wants you to see that isn’t visible yet.

Stay Close. Listen. Take the Next Step.

You don’t have to have every student—or every situation—figured out right now.

You have access to the One who sees the whole story.

So instead of trying to anticipate everything that might be ahead, stay close to Him and trust Him to show you what you need for what’s in front of you.

One student.

One conversation.

One invitation.

One faithful yes.

With Him.

You are called.

You are equipped.

And you are not walking into your school alone.

Teach connected, friend.

A Simple Prayer for Christian Teachers

Jesus, thank You that You never ask us to carry our calling apart from You. Give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, and open the eyes of our hearts. Help us see our students, coworkers, classrooms, and circumstances through Your perspective. Quiet the pressure to have everything figured out. Teach us to recognize Your presence and Your invitations throughout our ordinary school days. Give us wisdom to listen, courage to follow, and grace for our next faithful yes. Amen.
